Born and raised in Hoi An, Le Ngoc Thuan nurtured a love for art and local cultural values from an early age. Around 2020, amidst the quiet days of the pandemic, he strolled along the beach and was troubled by the sight of driftwood washed ashore after the flood season—things often considered soulless waste. Driven by his love for local culture, he resolved to embark on a journey to "revive" them. From a self-taught chef, he taught himself carpentry, meticulously infusing his soul into each piece of driftwood. He doesn't bend or shape the wood, but rather follows the grain and cracks caused by sand erosion to create the sculptures.
At the Drought Wood Village, you'll smell the rich aroma of raw wood, touch the rough texture, and hear the rhythmic clicking of chisels. Instead of being constrained, you can choose a piece of driftwood yourself, use your intuition to carve, polish, and tell your own story. Holding that rustic item in your hands, you will clearly feel the rebirth and appreciation for the simplest things from the artist of Hoi An.
What you'll get to experience with us
Begin your journey by visiting the traditional woodworking village of Cui Lu, where the familiar sounds of chisels and saws are still heard. Here, you'll learn about the origins of recycled wood, how to select the right wood for carving, and the basic tools used by artisans. Next, an artisan will help you sketch your ideas onto a small piece of wood – from simple shapes to personalized patterns. Holding the chisel, each stroke requires you to slow down, listen to the wood grain, and feel your concentration building with each movement. The artisan will observe and guide you. At the end of the experience, you'll sand, apply oil or natural wax, and admire your finished work amidst the gentle scent of wood. The small item you take home is not just a souvenir, but a vivid memory of a hands-on experience with traditional woodworking.

Here, you will learn about the origin of recycled wood, how to choose the right wood for carving, along with the basic hand tools of artisans.
- 2Come up with ideas & sketch designs15mCollaborate with the artisans to select a model and sketch the sculpture ideas on each small piece of wood, from simple shapes to intricate patterns. This is the stage to showcase your creativity and unique personality before moving on to the practical part.
- 3Sculpture practice1hUnder the attentive guidance of the artisan, you will learn how to use chisels, knives, and rasps to carve shapes on wood. Each chisel stroke is an emotion, and you will feel the concentration, patience, and joy as the form gradually appears. The artisan always closely follows to ensure safety and provide technical support.
- 4Complete & polish the product30mAfter the artwork is completed, you will be guided to sand, paint with natural oil, or wax the surface to make it smooth and beautifully colored. Finally, the product will be hung on a hook or carefully packaged – becoming a unique handmade gift created by your own hands.
What You Need to Know
Terms & Conditions
- Age & health condition: Suitable for all ages, however, participants need to have the ability to grip and operate basic tools.
- Clothing & personal equipment: Wear comfortable, easy-to-move clothes, closed-toe shoes, and avoid loose sleeves to ensure safety when engraving.
- No prior carving skills required; you will be guided step by step by the artist.
- During the use of knives, wood chisels, or sharp tools, participants need to follow safety instructions. Children must be supervised by adults throughout the activity.
- Additional note / special restrictions: Children under 8 years old only participate in coloring and decorating on pre-prepared products. All products are packaged as souvenirs after the experience session.
Cancellation Policy
- Cancel 48 hours (2 days) in advance: No charge.
- Cancel after 48 hours (2 days): Charge 50% experience fee.
Child Policy
- Under 6 years old: Not recommended to participate.
- From 6-8 years old: Only participate in coloring and decorating, accompanied by an adult (still bring home the finished product).
- Over 8 years old: Can participate in basic carving under the guidance of a master.
