What makes this experience unique?
The journey of artisan Vo Tan Tan lies in his return to bamboo as a return to the roots of rural life in Cam Thanh. He uses the traditional technique of soaking bamboo in mud – a method that makes bamboo more durable, resistant to termites, and preserves its natural color over time. From slow, deliberate processes like splitting, shaping, and bending bamboo entirely by hand, the products at Taboo Bamboo Workshop are not only durable and useful but also possess a unique, rustic beauty. This is where ancient craftsmanship meets contemporary thinking, and bamboo continues to tell the cultural story of Hoi An through each material and the hands of the artisan.
What you'll get to experience with us
You step into a rustic bamboo house, where the scent of dried bamboo blends with the cool air and the rhythmic sounds of handcrafted tools. The artisans explain why bamboo – seemingly only used for simple objects – is durable, flexible, easily bent, and even more versatile than wood, capable of creating both living spaces and exquisite products. Under their gentle guidance, you personally select, carve, sand, and assemble bamboo according to your own ideas, free from rigid patterns, feeling the smooth texture of the bamboo under your fingertips. Each step brings a sense of relaxation, as if you are conversing with the natural material. When the product is finished, the artisans help you sand, refine the details, and display your "artwork" for everyone. The experience concludes with laughter, souvenir photos, and the feeling of having truly touched the resilient and adaptable spirit of Vietnamese bamboo.
