What makes this experience unique?
Ms. Cong grew up surrounded by the sounds of looms and the sun-dried sedge by the river. Unlike large-scale commercial trades like boatbuilding, carpentry, or pottery, the sedge mat weaving craft is directly linked to the daily life of the people of Hoi An. Formerly a tour guide, she chose to return to her hometown to revive the fading traditional mat weaving craft in her own unique way. In her small house by the Thu Bon River, she has created a space where visitors can both practice their craft and experience it firsthand. Tourists can go to the sedge fields, split the sedge, sit at the loom, and complete a mat with their own personal touch. Besides traditional mats, she also creates bags, fans, and lanterns from sedge – simple yet innovative. A story of the craft village is told slowly, through her hands and her enduring love for the culture of Cam Kim.

By participating in the Carpet Weaving Workshop at Kim Bong craft village, you will immerse yourself in the peaceful space along the Thu Bon River – where the traditional weaving essence of Hoi An is preserved. Under the dedicated guidance of local artisans, you will learn how to prepare sedge fibers, mix colors, and hand-weave to create a unique dining table carpet with a personal touch. This is not only a creative activity but also a journey to explore the culture, meticulousness, and work ethic of the craft village people.

- 1Introduction & Getting to know the craft village30mStarting in the rural space near the Thu Bon River; artisans introduce the history of local mat weaving, materials such as sedge/rush, the process of harvesting - drying - dyeing fibers, and traditional decorative patterns.
- 2Experience hand-weaving with artisans2hUnder the attentive guidance, you practice the main steps: splitting - twisting threads, stretching the frame, threading flowers, weaving with shuttle & comb, adjusting hand and foot force to make the fabric surface flat. Each action requires meticulousness, bringing a sense of relaxation and joy as the pattern gradually appears on the loom.
- 3Complete & admire the product30mComplete the edge of the mat (border, cut thread, press flat), embellish with colors according to your preference to make the liner unique. Take souvenir photos and receive mini finished products or sample woven as a meaningful anniversary gift.
What You Need to Know
Terms & Conditions
- Suitable for all ages, especially for tourists who love handicrafts and cultural experiences.
- Clothing & personal equipment: Wear comfortable, easy-to-move clothes. No need to bring personal tools; all materials & equipment are prepared by the workshop.
- Skills or experience required: Not mandatory. The artist guides in detail each step from processing fibers, framing to weaving completion.
- Children need adults to support them in stretching the frame or pulling the thread. The artisan always closely follows to ensure safety and provides hand adjustments when needed.
- Additional notes / special restrictions: It is recommended to make a reservation at least 1 day in advance to ensure the workshop has enough materials prepared. Each student will complete 01 product to take home after the class.

- Cancel after 48 hours (2 days): 100% fee
Child Policy
- Children under 6 years old: need a guardian to accompany and provide continuous support during the weaving process.
- Children aged 6 and above: can participate in simple tasks under the guidance of the artist.
