What makes this experience unique?
Incense is commonly placed on the ancestral altar in Giay households during rituals, festivals, and important moments throughout the year. Because of this role, many families still make incense by hand using simple materials such as bamboo sticks and wood powder mixed with herbs. To form each stick, the bamboo is rolled repeatedly in the moist powder so the incense layer spreads evenly around it. The process requires patience, since uneven layers can cause the incense to burn poorly. When you try rolling the incense and laying the sticks out to dry in the sun, you realize the work is slow and repetitive—much like the way families traditionally prepare incense for everyday spiritual practices.

- 1Welcome & Introduction.You will start the journey with a meeting with local artisans and learn about the traditional perfume making profession. The artisans will share about various herbs such as cinnamon, star anise, dried grapefruit peel, and forest medicinal plants used to create natural scents. This is when you feel the sophistication in selecting ingredients and the 'pure natural' philosophy of the profession. The rustic craft village space helps you easily blend into the native life rhythm.
- 2Mix the ingredients & adjust the fragrance.You will directly participate in the herbal powder mixing step - a crucial stage that determines the quality and fragrance of the incense. The master will guide you on adjusting the ratio to create a harmonious and pleasant fragrance. You can try combining various ingredients to create a unique blend. This is an exciting experience for those who love natural fragrances.
- 3Straighten - roll the scent into each stick.After having a complete mixture, you will be guided to knead the dough and roll it into evenly and firmly shaped sticks. Each step from stretching, rolling to adjusting the thickness requires skill and meticulousness. Under the guidance of the artisan, you will gradually become proficient and feel the relaxation when working with herbs.
- 4Expose the fragrance & explore the art of aging scent.You will accompany the artisans to sun-dry the incense - an important step to naturally dry the incense and preserve the long-lasting fragrance. The artisans share secrets about the drying time, the method of 'fermenting the scent' to achieve the best quality fragrance. While waiting, you can explore the production area and listen to stories about the history of the incense craft. This is an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the cultural value of the traditional craft.
- 5Packaging & receiving the product.When the incense is dry, you will participate in the simple packaging step to complete the product. The artisan will guide you on how to preserve the incense to keep its fragrance long-lasting and safe during transportation. You can bring the incense sticks made by your own hands as gifts or souvenirs. This is a perfect ending to a rich and meaningful cultural experience.
