Indigo blue is one of the most recognizable colors in Hmong clothing. In the past, when families made their own textiles, women would draw patterns on hemp cloth using melted beeswax before dyeing it in indigo. The wax prevents the dye from reaching the covered areas, so once the cloth is dyed and the wax removed, white lines appear against the deep blue background. These patterns often appear on skirts, jackets, and fabrics worn during important gatherings or celebrations. What makes the process interesting is that the designs are not traced from fixed templates—each person draws them by hand. When you try it yourself, you realize how much patience it takes to keep the wax flowing smoothly, draw steady lines on the cloth, and wait as the indigo slowly settles into the fibers.
